I was thinking about hugs yesterday. How great it is to give and receive a really great hug, and how long it has been since I have had one. You know, the kind of hug where you become one with the other person. It is non-sexual, just two beings coming together sharing heart space. Of course I hug my kids everyday, I hug my dog and cat, I hug my friends and some clients (if they initiate it). But rarely do I take the time to slow down from my seemingly busy life, wrap my arms around another person and simply be in heart space.
Slowing down and simply being puts me in a vulnerable position, a position I am not always comfortable being in. But I realize the more I just be, the more wonder and joy comes into my life. So today, in honor of Valentine's Day, and in honor of human connection from this day forward, I will allow myself to slow down and savor each human being I hug. I will slow down with a deep breath, and consciously wrap my arms around them, joining our two hearts together. I will take at least one breath while hugging and easily let the other person go if I feel them releasing. I will feel their heart beat with mine if we continue our connection and I will allow my thoughts to pass through my mind without judging them. Like a good massage, a good hug is highly therapeutic. Research shows that hugs lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and increase pleasure senses. There is even a therapeutic prescription to how many hugs a day we need. Psychotherapist Virginia Satir was quoted saying, “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” So join me in increasing good health for yourself and the planet and go out and start giving great heart centered hugs!
